WELCOME TO
THE BOLSA CHICA
WETLANDS
The salt water marsh pages are not complete, many more photos are coming soon along with more educational material. I hope that you will enjoy the random photos that are here now. Scroll down for photo links.
Bolsa Chica is a natural salt-water-marsh land located along the coast in Orange county, southern California across from Bolsa Chica state beach between Sunset & Huntington beaches.
Surrounded on every side by condos, oil fields, pavement and smog, this piece of pristine environment has survived and flourished for thousands of years. It is a major stop-over for many migratory birds from around the globe some of which are rare.
Now today and every day its existence is under the threat of total distinction. The condos are getting closer, the pavement is getting closer the oil fields are getting closer, beach front property is worth millions and some of the Bolsa Chica wetland is owned privately by someone that would rather see condos, pavement and oil fields than preserve one of the few remaining natural salt marsh wetlands on earth.
The many miles of beaches of the southern California coast are already so polluted that they are shut down as "unsafe to humans" more often than they are opened
do to high levels of toxic waste.
In California the Pacific Coast Highway and all of the businesses and condos that line it on both sides are built in the area between the green bars.
The man made breakwater, shown above in gray, would be a 1/2 mile or so out. This would cause high tide to reach only where low tide is shown above.
